Benefit expenditure is primarily focused on pensions, housing costs and the collapse in middle-income salaries.
Most discussions of benefits in the UK are based on a confused understanding of the current system. Very few benefits are for unemployment (0.7%) and most are forms of basic income (Pensions or Child Benefit) or are ways of compensating for income inequalities caused by the labour market or property ownership.
