How activists aligned with people with developmental disabilities and their families in Canada, the US and the UK.
Author: John O'Brien
This paper describes the emergence of person-centred planning and the challenges faced as a grass-roots social innovation comes into contact with the managerial, mechanical and institutional forces of modern society.
Person-centred planning is one of the most important social innovations to emerge from the Inclusion Movement and, as John O'Brien describes, it was developed as a flexible array of questions and techniques, all underpinned by a commitment to the full inclusion of people with developmental disabilities. He outlines the interweaving of many threads that inspired its development and the contrast this with the formulaic models of person-centred planning that are often incorporated into public policy.
