Maria Lyons

Maria Lyons

Born and raised in an ‘intentional community’ inspired by unorthodox social principles, Maria Lyons developed a lasting interest in grassroots community activism. In particular, how small-scale community initiatives can be a means of tackling national and even international social challenges.

This interest led Maria to a degree in Politics and International Relations and on to a multi-disciplinary PhD which critically assessed education and learning systems in Western democracies.

As an independent researcher Maria has written about Camphill communities, intellectual disabilities, the meaning of work, inclusion and education. More recently she has been focusing on the ways in which economic and social policies are affecting children and families.

When she can fit it around being a full-time mum, Maria delivers courses in academic skills and also teaches English as a second language.
