The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has published a new report: Living Standards, Poverty and Inequality in the UK: 2016, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The analysis draws upon the data underlying the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)’s Households Below Average Income (HBAI) series, published on 28 June 2016. The HBAI series is derived from the Family Resources Survey (FRS), a survey of more than 20,000 households in the UK that asks detailed questions about income from a range of sources.
Dr Simon Duffy, Director of the Centre for Welfare Reform, commented:
"As this latest IFS report shows, government policy is both increasing and reshaping poverty in modern Britain. Increasingly it is the young, families and those on low, or even moderate incomes, who are being dragged into poverty alongside those without work and many disabled people. Clearly the reducing influence of the young on the political process is reinforcing injustice and leaving them unable to enjoy any reasonable level of security."
