It's Our Community

Creating a progressive policy for social care reform

We need a progressive vision for social care. This means:

1. Neighbourhood Focused - organised to support foster inclusive and welcoming neighbourhoods where everyone's contribution is recognised and supported.

2. People Powered - creating respectful relationships and encouraging peer support and neighbourliness, backed up by responsive professional support

3. Human Rights Based - giving people who need support freedom, clear entitlements and the ability to participate and contribute in the way that works best for them

4. Economically Secure - with no means-testing and proper levels of funding to enable full contribution and fair incomes for everyone

Citizen Network is supporting disabled people, families and community groups to develop this vision and share learning nationally and globally through our networks.

We held an event – as part of this year's Festival of Debate – in Sheffield in May 2023,  read about it here.

We held a number of events as part of 2022's Festival of Debate and recordings are available to watch below.

The first event focused on disabled people:

Playlist: It's Our Community Part One

The second event focused on older people:

The third event focused on young people and families:

After bringing together local and national people to discuss options and share ideas we will produce a summary of our findings and proposals for a progressive approach to social care.
