Hi, my name is Wendy Perez
I want a real life. I am self-advocate and I work with people with learning disabilities to help them to have a real life. I want to live my life like anyone else. I do not want people to take over and I want to encourage other people to live like me.
I’ve managed to live independently, without living in a group home. I want to look forward to more positive changes in my life.
Some basic information about me:
I live in Hammersmith & Fulham in London and I am well known all over, and I want to stay in this area for the rest of my life.
It’s really important that I have control over my own life, being able to make my own mistakes so I can learn from them - don’t take over.
I love Arsenal football team and I make all the home games and I’m well known at the club.
I use a wheelchair, but I can only stand a little. It’s really important I do exercises to strengthen my leg muscles and I workout regularly at a local gym, with my own personal trainer.
At the moment I live with my Mum and my Mum is the most important person in my life.
I have a network of friends and colleagues around the country and this is important to me.
I am co-author of the ‘Keys to Citizenship’ (with my friend Simon Duffy) and I want to be training people and doing talks about the ‘Keys to Citizenship’ in the future. The new version of ‘Keys to Citizenship’ will be published by Red Press in January 2024. It’s important to me that I live according to these ideas, which I always have—I don’t know any other way.
I really don’t want to live in residential care, use a day centre or do anything that takes my freedom away.
Do you think you could work with me?
