Les Monaghan's powerful photographic exhibition revealing the reality of poverty in modern Britain starts in Doncaster.

Les Monaghan is an artist interested in community and representation, Relative Poverty is his new body of work created with a group of families, defined as destitute, living in Balby, Doncaster. His project aims to raise awareness of destitution and challenge issues of agency, public engagement and fairness of representation.
Relative Poverty provides a catalyst to move the debate from ‘scroungers’ and dividing the poor into deserving and undeserving, and attempts to redress the balance.
Les Monaghan says:
"Whilst we know that many people are simply unaware of the lives lived by over a million people in the UK, this project bypasses the media that shields us from this knowledge and shows the link between this and the last government’s policies and the living conditions imposed upon ordinary people around us."
The first exhibition will take place in Doncaster.

A planned tour of all 25 Doncaster libraries is due to start in May with the final exhibition being held at Doncaster Central Library in June 2018. Plans are also being made to exhibit in Sheffield.
