I'm passionate about people, about what people can offer and how they can help drive a community. I've worked in both health and social care, being in receipt of both myself too due to an acquired brain injury and chronic illnesses. After having neurosurgery myself, I found there was an innate lack of care and compassion from the care and gap in support I received. This drove me to change career and head into Social care/work.
I have a love for research and found this when I was studying for my undergraduate degree in Learning Disability studies (BA Hons). It was emphasised more so, when I undertook my post graduate degree in Social work (MSc). I've worked in adults Social work (Mental health and ‘generic’) in a local authority which I found difficult, as it conflicted with my values as there felt to be a disconnect.
I was in a severe road traffic accident on my way to a home visit during COVID. Thankfully, and I can say this on reflection I am so happy to be in the position I am now. I am a lecturer at a university, bringing awareness to communication needs and nuances that students need to be aware of in practice. Whilst doing what I am extremely passionate about, embedding experts by experience into the social work curriculum. Empowering students and hopefully, stepping into the realms of research.
